Walks to uncover town’s rich history

by Ray Duffill

Hedon history walks will take place once again over the weekend of August 10-11.

Tony Porter takes the helm on most of the walks but is joined in that task by new guide Lucy Brooke who will lead one of these.

On Saturday, August 10, residents and town visitors can join Tony on his Haven Walk at 11am and explore the town’s maritime heritage, including stories from the Middle Ages when Hedon was a significant port with a series of waterways. Meet at Johnson’s car park.

Later, at 2pm, Tony will meet walkers at Hedon Market Place and his stories around the town will cover 850 years of Hedon’s history.

There are three history walks on Sunday, August 11. The Westlands Walk, meeting at 11am on Market Hill, will discover Hedon’s surprising history with a distinctive transport theme as the stories and locations cover trains, planes and boats.

At 2.30pm Lucy Brooke will guide a new walk around the town in a series she calls Seven Deadly Sins, which looks at crime and punishment in historical Hedon. Discover some famous and infamous characters in the town’s more sordid history of sinners and their downfall. Meet at the west door of St Augustine’s Church.

The weekend of walks completes with the graveyard tour at St Augustine’s at 7 pm. The stones and tombstones come alive with strange and wonderful stories – there are some mysteries to be unearthed too. Meet at the main door of the church.

Walkers should wear appropriate footwear for the weather as when some footways can be muddy. The cost per person for each walk is £5. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
