The captain of the MV Solong has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter following a fatal collision with an oil tanker in the North Sea earlier this week.
Humberside Police, supported by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), confirmed that Vladimir Motin, 59, of Primorsky, St Petersburg, Russia, had been charged in connection with the incident.
He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Hull Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, March 15.
The charge comes amid the ongoing investigation into the collision, which happened on Monday, March 10.
The Solong, a Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel, struck the Stena Immaculate, a US-registered oil tanker, about 10 miles off the coast of South Holderness just before 10am on Monday, sparking a large-scale rescue operation led by the coastguard.
One crew member from the Solong was reported missing following the crash. Despite extensive searches, the sailor is now presumed to have died.
A spokesman for Humberside Police said: “The family are being supported by specialist trained officers and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”
