Mark Williamson has received the Hornsea Harriers shield, voted for by the Harriers for all his achievements, especially the 200 miles he completed for charity earlier this year and for surpassing more than 100 marathons.
He is always there supporting others during races and club runs.
Mark said: “Finding out I had won the Harriers achievement award this year after being unable to attend our annual Christmas party, I would like to say how honoured and humbled I felt. There are so many supportive and improved runners in the Hornsea Harriers that it could have gone to any one of them.
“My personal vote went to Glyn Harker, who ran his first-ever marathon, stuck to a training plan, only comes up to Hornsea on a weekend, and not only completed the Yorkshire Marathon in horrendous conditions without stopping or moaning, but has since entered the Leeds Marathon and finished with the biggest smile on his face.
“I would therefore like to thank each and every one of you for your votes – it really means a lot. The ultra events I enter, I would not be able to do without some of the Harriers, who are with me in mind, body, soul – and dark and dodgy country lanes. Here’s to another year of safe running, PBs not being important, and Harriers on tour.”
Mark later took part in Grim Up North’s last event of the year. He added: “The race starts at Sewerby and goes along the promenade, across the harbour and a little bit further. You had to run out and back four times to make up marathon distance… there were other distances on offer ranging from 5k to marathon.
“The weather was absolutely spot on, meaning the promenade was very busy, which meant any PB was definitely out of the question. Last year I finished on 87 marathons, and this year I’ve finished on 104. It’s been a really good year, achieving my 100th marathon.
“I’ve managed to run with my wonderful wife at the Leeds Marathon, finished the Hardmoors 200 (which only counts as one marathon!), and ran with Glyn Harker on his very first marathon.”
Jacqui Hanson decided to do the Bridlington 10k on Sunday, December 29, to run off all the cheese and wine consumed over the festive period. She said: “What a great course! Starting at Sewerby, it’s a nice flat run along the seafront, past the Spa, and all the way to South Prom and back the same way.
“The sun shone, and the free bacon sandwiches at the finish made this one of my new favourite races! I’ll definitely do it again next year. Nice to see Mark Williamson there running his 104th marathon.”
