A large number of spectators gathered on Withernsea’s promenade on Boxing Day to watch more than 80 people of all ages take to the cold North Sea.
The annual event, organised by Withernsea and District Lions Club, attracted the largest number of dippers for many years. While the sea conditions were almost perfect for the participants, the day was marked by foggy weather. Fortunately, the tide was well in, allowing spectators to enjoy the fun.
Many dippers donned fancy dress and festive Christmas outfits. Some dashed straight in and out of the water, while others lingered for more than 10 minutes, acclimatising to the cold.
As always, safety was a top priority. Members of the RNLI and HM Coastguard were present both in the water and on the beach to handle any emergencies, but the event passed without incident.
The focus was on fun and fundraising, with some participants raising money for their own charities or organisations, while others fundraised for the Lions, who also had collection buckets on the promenade.
