Woman completes gruelling charity challenge

by Rebecca Hannant

A Roos woman has raised more than £1,000 after walking the Three Peaks Challenge.

Laura Dovey said she was inspired to do the challenge after going on walks throughout the Covid lockdowns.

Laura said: “I started walking just before Covid hit, for several personal reasons. I really found it beneficial for my mental health so continued. I’ve always done fundraising for charities but decided I could combine this with challenging myself. So, I took on my first Macmillan Mighty Hike in 2019 in the Lake District then did another last year in Northumberland.

“This year I thought I needed something other than just simply walking. I’d always fancied giving the Yorkshire Three Peaks a go so jumped at the chance of doing it for Marie Curie this time.”

Laura said that supporting Marie Curie was the right thing to do as the charity’s support has been a “godsend” to her and her partner who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

After hearing about Laura’s challenge, friends and family came together to provide emotional support and encouragement.

Laura added: “Funnily enough none of my friends were crazy enough to join me but supported me in shorter training walks, my children Ella and Harry and partner Paul were so understanding of me disappearing for hours on end to prepare myself physically.

“What surprised me most was the heartwarming support I received from the local community – the support at a quiz night was phenomenal and the generosity of those who pledged sponsorship blew me away.”

Laura managed to complete the challenge in nine hours and 46 minutes. She said she took extra time because of the fog and ended up walking an extra kilometre before getting back on track.

She added: “I got absolutely soaked, but weirdly enjoyed every single minute. I met some lovely people all while doing the challenge for many different reasons. The support everyone showed each other was a delight, too – everyone encouraging each other on through the tough sections. Fundraising currently stands at over £1,395.”
