The Southern Holderness Resource Centre in Withernsea – better known as Shores – is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month.
Since 2005, the centre has offered vital support to the local community with a range of services including access to education, skills development, employment help and advice, financial support and more.
Now 20 years on, the centre has undergone a revamp ahead of a 20th anniversary celebration on Friday, March 7. The event will bring together trustees, partners, supporters and community champions to mark the milestone.
CEO Jayne Nendick said: “We’re celebrating 20 years of serving the community. Our theme is a ‘celebration of appreciation’. It’s our one big thank you to those people who have been part of our journey over the years. This includes the trustees, the partners and the stakeholders, and of course the community.”
Jayne, who joined the centre just after it opened, said she had seen it evolve over the years to meet the ever-changing needs of the community.
She added: “I can remember when I first started, the chair of the charity at that point was a lady called Jenny Pattison. Jenny had quite significant health issues. One day she came in and I said to her, ‘I thought you had a hospital appointment?’ She just looked at me with steely blue eyes, grabbed my hand, and said: ‘While I have got the ability, I have got the responsibility.’ We sadly lost her the year after.
“That is the mantra I try to abide by and I try to instil that in others.”
