Views sought on plan for shared cycle path

by Rebecca Hannant

East Riding Council has launched a consultation to gather views on a proposed cycleway in Withernsea.

In line with the UK Government’s aims to increase the use of cycling and walking, especially for short regular journeys, the council is proposing a scheme to extend a cycling route along the seafront.

This aims to help reduce car journeys and encourage cycling between the outlying caravan sites at either end of the promenade and seafront amenities, along with better connections for residents to the town centre by extending existing safe off-road facilities.

The new shared cycleway/footway would run along the seafront parallel with Seathorne, join the road for a short length and then rejoin the existing promenade path continuing south.

It would provide a longer scenic journey with open views of the sea, further encouraging cycling to amenities and the town centre, to help promote tourism and enhance the economy of Withernsea.

It is anticipated that the scheme would be funded via external sources.

The council is seeking views from residents, businesses and visitors to the area. Comments can be submitted to transport.policy@eastriding. gov.uk by September 15.
