Trip to hall was enjoyed by all

The July meeting of Burstwick WI took a different format, and our guest speaker Carol Osgerby was introduced.

She gave a very detailed and informative talk on Villains and Heroes, and we were most surprised to learn that many villains going back to the 12th century were around the Holderness area, as was many heroes too.

She spoke of other areas, and mentioned the villains who did the planning for the blowing up of Parliament, and Dick Turpin the highwayman.

Carol supports the Red Cross and her fee and any donations from members go to this charity. A vote of thanks to her was given, and she left before the business of the meeting started. Usual business was discussed followed by refreshments, which were cupcakes – our competition for the evening and enjoyed by all.

August meeting was our usual trip out and it was decided to go to Sigglesthorne Garden Centre. We arrived to have a look around and to take a light lunch, leaving at 1pm to visit Wassand Hall, near Hornsea.

We found this a very a worthwhile visit – the house itself has been in the same family and is still lived in. The parkland surrounding it is amazing – with a view down to Hornsea Mere it is so unspoilt, and the gardens are beautiful and well kept.

We finished off in the garden tearoom with tea and delicious cakes. It is well worth a visit, but it only opens so many weeks in the year.

It was lovely day and all members who attended had a good time.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, September 3, at 7pm in Burstwick Village Hall, when our guest speaker is Paul Schofield who will be talking about memories of Hull Fair.

If anyone would like to join us, they will be made most welcome.
