Town hosts second successful heart screening session

Withernsea’s Meridian Centre has hosted the town’s second heart screening session by Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The event, funded by the Darren Uscroft Memorial Fund, saw a 98 per cent turnout and a small number of referrals for further investigation or treatment.

These tests are potentially lifesaving, as they detect undiagnosed heart defects.

At a cost of £6,000 per session, it is by no means cheap, but in the same breath, they are worth every penny, the charity said.

A spokesman said: “We will continue to fundraise so that more people can be tested locally, and you’ll soon see our new collection boxes out and about, so if anyone can support us, we’d be so grateful.

“Every penny goes towards heart screening and the purchase of local defibrillators. We have funded two defibrillators in Withernsea so far with contributions for another two in the pipeline.

“Many thanks to those that have supported us so far. It is your efforts that make these sessions happen. Also, thanks to Andy Medcalf for our new logo and Precious Prints for our collection boxes.”
