Teenager fundraising for once-in-a-lifetime expedition to Peru

by Rebecca Hannant

A teenager from Hedon is raising funds for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Peru.

Next year, Adam Thompson, 13, a year nine student at Holderness Academy, will embark on a four-week expedition with social enterprise Camps International.

Organised in conjunction with the school, the trip will see Adam help communities across Peru by assisting in the construction of toilets, homes and community centres.

The experience will also include a five-day trek to Machu Picchu.

To take part in the expedition, Adam needs to raise £4,750 and has been using his initiative to contact local businesses, many of which have already offered support.

Adam said: “While there, I will be building local community centres, supporting conservation and reforestation projects, and trekking to Machu Picchu.

“I must raise all the money myself and will be doing tons of fundraising activities over the next 18 months – including sponsored bike rides, paddle boarding around the Lake District and hiking to the top of Scafell Pike while dressed as a llama.”

Over the coming months, Adam will continue fundraising during school holidays, with various challenges and events planned. He has already begun leaflet drops in his local area and has launched a GoFundMe page.

Adam said: “I’ve contacted businesses for sponsorship, done leaflet drops and set up a GoFundMe, which has been generating the bulk of the money so far.”

His parents are also lending their support – selling llama-themed jewellery and helping promote the campaign.

Adam’s father has been using his business contacts to boost donations.

Adam has so far raised around a third of his target.
