Members of non-profit organisation Ruben’s Voice have taken a great leap to raise money for the cause.
On Sunday, July 21, Katy Smith, founder of Ruben’s Voice, braved a 10,000ft skydive in Bridlington to raise money and awareness for the organisation. She was supported by nine friends who also did the jump, and seven more will undertake the challenge this month.
Ruben’s Voice was set up by Katy, of Hedon, after her son Ruben took his own life in April 2021, aged just 18.
Katy wanted to raise awareness of suicide prevention and the help available to anyone struggling with their mental health, as well as aiming to improve wellbeing in the community by providing positive events, experiences and challenges.
She said: “It was terrifying. I didn’t want to do it, but somehow, I feel like it’s up to me to do all the things Ruben will never get to do.
“He would have been first on to that plane and first to jump out. I took some of his ashes along with me for the jump and scattered them on the runway afterwards. It’s great that 19 others have the chance to complete such an amazing challenge too.”
Money raised will go towards the annual Ruben’s Voice concert on Saturday, August 17.
The event will include live music and entertainment suitable for all the family, as well as a range of charity stalls promoting their services for anyone who needs them.
Additional funds will also go towards creating the Ruben’s Voice wellbeing hub in Drapers Lane, Hedon.
