Rugby youngsters pack for Rhinos challenge

by Michelle Horst

Young rugby league players spent their Easter weekend packing shoppers’ bags at Hornsea’s Tesco supermarket.

The Holderness Vikings Youth under-12s and their guardians hoped to raise additional funds to purchase new equipment and kit for the team. But new kit was not the only cause for their enthusiasm.

Noah Abel, little brother Lewis, and Deven were four of the team helping on the day and explained jointly: “We’re collecting to go to the Leeds Rhinos Challenge at Butlins.”

Katie, one of the volunteer parents, said: “It’s the last year they can attend, so we’re trying to make it extra special.”

Money raised will help with the costs of attending the challenge, including travel and accommodation for the young players.

“They’re so polite and helpful. I’m happy to donate a little to help them on their way,” a Tesco shopper said.

The Rhinos Challenge is in its second year. The challenge is professionally organised by one of the leading rugby league clubs to give grassroots clubs a touring experience. The rugby league festival will be held in Skegness in May where the Butlins resort is exclusively booked for more than 260 attending teams.

The under-12 teams will take part in games held off-site. All the competitors will enjoy the entertainment and excitement at Butlins after their matches. The weekend concludes in a showcase and presentation on Sunday, May 12, with celebrity guests.
