A cascade of poppies has been hung on Withernsea’s Pier Towers in time for Remembrance Day.
For the second year running, a net with hundreds of crocheted and knitted poppies attached to it has been draped on the landmark.
The project was organised by Withernsea’s Royal British Legion president Darren England who, alongside his wife Marie, secured materials including the wool and the camouflage net with help from the RAOB.
Crafters from across Withernsea created hundreds of red and purple poppies for the project, knitting more to replace those lost last year, and to fill in the gaps on the net. The poppies were then secured to the netting with the help of the town’s scout group.

Meanwhile, children from Withernsea Primary School have worked alongside the Royal British Legion to produce a wire-mesh soldier that sits on the bench to the right side of the Pier Towers.
Darren said: “I wanted to do a project and the RAOB has provided the funding for the materials. The primary school has created the figure that sits on the bench this year.
“We couldn’t have a cascade down that side because of the ramp coming up. We didn’t want to interfere with the ramps, but we wanted to do something on the other side. So we’ve gone for the ghostly figure on the bench so people can sit down if necessary, have their picture taken, and just maybe sit and have a think.
“I would also like to thank the ladies who have knitted the poppies – so far, we have received 500 more. We would also like to thank the RNLI and and all the ladies and gents who have come out to help set up the cascades, and to Withernsea Town Council, which has helped in this endeavour for the second year.”
