‘Please help us ensure carnival can continue for many years to come’

by Rebecca Hannant

The Withernsea Carnival committee are gearing up for their 100th anniversary event this summer.

The carnival has been a popular tradition since 1924, hosting a range of events for children and adults alike.

This year organisers are planning another 10-day schedule of events including the parade, arts and crafts, games, music and other entertainment.

Over the years, the carnival has become a focal point for family events during the summer holidays – but, like many other event organisers locally and nationally, they say that they are facing increasing financial pressures.

A spokeswoman said: “This year, Withernsea Carnival is celebrating 100 years, and we want to host our most impactful event yet and involve as many local businesses, community groups and individuals as possible.

“Withernsea Carnival is a volunteer-led community group that aims to provide free activities for the children, residents and visitors of Withernsea during the school holidays.

“Withernsea is a small coastal town that is unfortunately both impoverished and isolated. We have many children and families that are living in poverty, have poor mental health, low aspirations and feel forgotten.

“The committee has noticed the increased need in our local area for activities that are low-cost or free of charge and will promote socialisation, positive mental health and allow the children of this area to experience things that those who live in other areas take for granted.”

Ahead of the 100th anniversary event, Withernsea Carnival is seeking sponsors to help ensure it continues to be a success for years to come.

The spokeswoman added: “It costs on average £9,000 to run our year-long programme of entertainment and refreshments.

Unfortunately, due to the current economic crisis we are running low on funds and may struggle to provide these services in the future.

“Please consider sponsoring our event. Any gift is appreciated, either providing to buy much-needed supplies, prizes and items to raffle and/ or sponsorship of a day, which will make a huge difference in our ability to plan and execute this event.

“We’d also like to offer you something in return for your generosity. Withernsea Carnival will make sure that your business will be mentioned in the carnival programme, on social media, in the press and on the radio. If you choose to sponsor a day, then we will promote your banners and merchandise.”

Any individual or business that would like to support Withernsea Carnival, take part in the parade, or discuss plans for the event should email organisers at [email protected].

Ahead of the main carnival, which will run from August 17 to August 26, a family fun day will take place on Wednesday, April 29, from 11am to 4pm on Withernsea’s Hull Road playing field. Included in the event will be stalls, games and other entertainment.
