Photographers urged to enter village competition

by Ray Duffill

The categories for this summer’s Preston Open Photography Competition were formally announced on Saturday.

The contest and the judging will take place on Saturday, August 5, at the Preston Show and Family Fun Day at the Nags Head.

The Preston Show is a popular family event, and this will be the seventh year that it has been staged on the grounds of the pub, in Sproatley Road.

On-stage entertainment and live music will run over the day. There will be fairground rides, activities and games for the children. In addition to the fun day, there will also be the annual village show with classes for vegetables/fruit, wine, cakes/jams, flowers, art, crafts and lots more including children’s classes.

The photography classes have grown in popularity in recent years and the competition has evolved into a major photography event in the area. Hedon Viewfinders photography club has sponsored the competition once again with trophies for the winners of the categories, and trophies for the Photographer of the Year and Young Photographer of the Year (for the best entry in any category from children who are 16 and under).

On Saturday, April 15, representatives from Hedon Viewfinders and the Preston Show group announced the Open Photography Competition categories for this year at the Hedon Museum, the location of the photography club’s current exhibition.

There are four open categories to enter – you can submit one print only in each category. The categories for the 2023 competition are:

  1. Landscape and seascapes
  2. Pets and wildlife
  3. Transport
  4. Black and white

The competition is open to all. Your prints (no mounting and framing needed) can be up to a maximum size of A4 (210 x 297 mm / 8.3 x 11.7in). Prints (in protective sleeves, to keep them clean) can be sent in advance to Hedon Viewfinders c/o 6 Johnson Court, Hedon, HU12 8EF or dropped into any Hedon Viewfinders meeting on a Wednesday evening from 6.45 pm – 7 pm at the Haven Arms.

Alternatively, you can bring them in on the morning of the Preston Show to the show tent from 9am and before 10.45am. You need to put your name, the title of your print, age (if 16 or younger), telephone number and contact email address on the back of the print.
