Hornsea Sporting tournament promises to be fun-filled family event

A community football tournament aimed at children of all ages and abilities is set to take place in Hornsea on Saturday, July 5 – with organisers hoping to turn it into a fun-filled day for the whole family.

The event, hosted by Hornsea Sporting FC and organised by Hornsea Sporting Sharks coach Chris Barr, will be held at the 3G pitch on the Hornsea School and Language College site.

The tournament is being sponsored by local business Larkham Leisure, whose support has helped make the event possible.

Four age groups will be taking part, with eight teams in each, bringing together players from Hornsea and beyond – including teams travelling from Hull and Beverley.

Matches will run throughout the day, with a food stall and tuck shop on site, and all proceeds going straight back into the club.

A Sharks spokeswoman said: “It’s not just about football – it’s about giving kids the opportunity to be part of something, to make friends, grow in confidence and learn life skills like teamwork, dedication and resilience.

“Some of our boys train two or three times a week and give up their Sundays to play – they’re so committed, and it’s lovely to see how they’ve developed.”

She added that events like this were vital not only for the children, but for the wider community too.

“We’re trying to raise awareness of the 3G pitch and get more people involved. It’s a brilliant facility that’s now offering walking football and other sessions for people of all fitness levels. Sport is for everyone – whether you’re playing or just coming down to watch and support.”

Last year’s tournament was hit by heavy rain, which meant some of the planned fundraising couldn’t go ahead – but spirits remained high, and this year the club hopes for better weather and an even bigger turnout.

She added: “We’ve been lucky to have such supportive coaches and local sponsors – Chris in particular goes above and beyond. He’s taken the boys to watch Hull City, to Honeysuckle Farm, and even sorted free trips to Hull Ice Arena. It makes a huge difference for those who might otherwise miss out during the school holidays.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the tournament – whether you have a child playing or just want to enjoy some grassroots football and soak up the community atmosphere. Entry is free, and the action kicks off from 10am.
