It was perfect conditions for rugby for the second leg of the seaside derby between the Holliswomen and the Valkyries at Scarborough.
The Hornsea ladies have one of the strongest forward sets within the league and took this to the match from the whistle.
The game was exciting and for periods it was a very forward dominant display with the pick and go pods working well. The opposition took an early lead within the first half but this did not deter the team, who kept their heads high and some good accurate passes to the back set.
The last play in the first half showed Hornsea testing the Valkyries’ defensive line constantly, which allowed Kelly Smith to score her first-ever try for the Holliswomen. Kelly pushed through their strong defence with power and determination to score. This was followed by an excellent conversion by the team captain, Vic Quinn-Baines.
Coach Steve had a much-needed talk to the Holliswomen which gave the reassurance and direction required for the second half.
The second half started well and the Holliswomen continued with the forward attack but could not stop the opposition star player at number 15, who scored six tries in total.
The Valkyries tested the team for the full 70 minutes and all excellent advocates for ladies’ rugby.
The Valkyries coach commented on how impressed he was and how far we have come as a team and how we should be very proud of the numbers we turn out. This for us shows the true spirit of the team and that the Holliswomen are going from strength to strength with each match played.
