Hedon Museum’s January sale – ends Friday!

by Ray Duffill

Hedon Museum is completing the final two days of an unusual sale this week on Thursday and Friday.

To free up room in its limited storage space, the museum is selling off some previously exhibited artefacts. Items for sale include old books, postcards, newspapers, vintage medical items and Victorian and Edwardian clothes. There will also be a selection of old gramophone records.

Shellacs, as they were originally known, were so called because of the brittle resin they were made from. They became more commonly called “78s” because they were played at a speed of 78 revolutions per minute. 78s were the main mass-produced audio format discs of the first half of the 20th century.

With the current revival of interest in vinyl records, the older shellac recordings are expected to bring in a lot of curious collectors.

The sale started on Wednesday but will continue on Thursday, January 23, and Friday, January 24, from 11am to 3pm on both days.

The museum can be found by following the signs on Watmough’s Arcade in Hedon town centre. You can also search for its entrance on the what3words mapping tool at caves.consoles.scorch.
