Freedom Festival performances coming to Bridlington

East Riding Arts has partnered with the Freedom Festival Arts Trust to present an array of captivating events in Bridlington this summer.

Freedom on Tour is set to feature an exhilarating afternoon of free circus performances by the seaside on Thursday, August 31.

For the first time in its 16-year history, Hull’s annual Freedom Festival is hitting the road. Making an exclusive one-day appearance on Bridlington’s seafront, audiences will experience internationally renowned performances that grace the main festival in Hull city centre each year.

Councillor Nick Coultish, portfolio holder for culture, leisure, and tourism at East Riding Council, said: “It’s great news that the council’s arts team, East Riding Arts, has been able to invest in this exciting new event for Bridlington, which will be a fantastic afternoon both for residents and visitors. The Freedom Festival in Hull is always very popular, and it’s very pleasing that we can now bring on to the East Riding coast as well.”

The event will unfold between Bridlington Spa and the RNLI Lifeboat Station, and admission is free.

In addition to the performances, visitors will have the opportunity to interact with festival volunteers and acquire a comprehensive Freedom Festival guide, showcasing the multitude of offerings available at this year’s event.

Laura Beddows, senior producer at the Freedom Festival Arts Trust, said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with East Yorkshire Arts to bring a taste of the Freedom Festival to the picturesque Bridlington seafront, next to Bridlington Spa.

“This event will spotlight the incredible talent that is available at the festival each year and introduce it to a new audience. We extend an invitation to everyone to join us for our inaugural festival outing and hope to see them at the main event in Hull over the weekend as well.”

Freedom on Tour will feature two Belgian circus companies: EXIT, by Circumstances, a physical circus and dance performance where movement, acrobatics and balance board merge; and Encore une Fois, by Tripotes la Compagnie: six shoulders, three heads and one collective, bringing a playful energy of circus, seesawing between reckless danger and perilous fragility.

Show times:

12-12.45pm Tripotes – ‘Encore une Fois’ show 1.
1-2pm Circumstances – ‘EXIT’ show 1.
3-3.45pm Tripotes – ‘Encore une Fois’ show 2.
4-5pm Circumstances – ‘EXIT’ show 2.
