Town stages first fight night in three decades

Withernsea staged its first boxing event in more than 30 years last Saturday, August 26.

The event at Hull Road playing fields, which saw 12 bouts watched by scores of spectators, was organised by Nath Iley in association with local events company Blip Active.

It was held in aid of Help for Heroes, and raised more than £2,100 with money still coming in.

Nath said: “It was a fantastic day – and everything I’d hoped it would be. Everyone behaved themselves and all went off in the right spirits.

“I had been approached by Carl Blyth about putting on a show in Hull, but I said I wanted to do it in Withernsea – I’d long had this vision of doing a big show in the town.”

Dave Penson of Blip Active said: “Nath had done the hard work, and I was proud and privileged to be asked to help with the event management on the day – it was yet another thing from bygone years that we’ve able to revive in the town, and it had been a year in the planning.”

Nath said he was hoping to repeat the Battle at the Seaside next summer, and asked for anyone interested in being involved to contact him on 07305 002254.
