A cheque for £50 was presented by Janet Bucknall of Hedon Viewfinders Photography Club to Ken Franks of Paull Church on Monday, October 7.
The donation was made to thank St Andrew’s Church for hosting the Paull Maritime Exhibition during the summer.
The photography club had been awarded a Hull Maritime Community Grant to conduct its project to explore the maritime stories of Paull and gather community anecdotes, histories, and photographs about the shrimp fishing industry, boat building, lighthouses, and other maritime history in the village on the bank of the Humber.
It was fitting that Ken Franks received the cheque on behalf of the church, as he had suffered to see the project realised.
On Saturday, July 21, Ken was due to lead a public photo walk around the village heritage trail as part of the project.
However, on the way there, he fell and injured his arm. One of the walkers, a medic, quickly strapped his arm up and advised a trip to the hospital, but Ken felt fit enough to lead the walk and did a great job explaining the village’s history.
After the event, though, Ken continued to have pain and eventually had to visit A&E, where, to his surprise, he discovered he had suffered a serious fracture.
Despite this, the project has been deemed successful, and the resources and information gathered have added to the rich collection of materials already curated by the church’s governing parochial council.
Janet thanked Ken, Mandy Annison, the volunteers from the church, and members of Hedon Viewfinders, all of whom helped stage the exhibition. She gave a special thanks to Emma Smith from the Hull Maritime Community Grant scheme and her team for supporting the project.
