Withernsea Wanderers Walking Football Club extended their unbeaten run in the Challenge Trophy on Saturday, May 17, with an impressive 11–7 win over Cottingham Forest Old Timers – and they’re calling on more players to join their growing squad.
The six-a-side match, with two substitutes per team, was the third meeting between the two sides and proved to be another lively encounter. Cottingham made their intentions clear with an early onslaught on the Wanderers’ goal, racing into a 3–0 lead within the first 15 minutes.
But the Wanderers responded in style, turning the game around to lead 5–4 at half-time. The second half saw the home side really get to grips with the game, controlling possession with slick passing and clinical finishing to run out 11–7 winners.
Joint players of the match were named Libby Atkins and Neil Pickering.
The match was very well controlled by one of Withernsea’s former players, Tony Bingham, who did a great job as both referee and timekeeper.
After the game, both sets of players enjoyed a few drinks and a fine spread of sandwiches, kindly put on by the landlord of the Commercial Inn in Queen Street.
The club has been running since October 2022 and meets every Friday from 6pm to 7pm at Withernsea Leisure Centre. It’s a fun, social and competitive way to stay active and enjoy the game at a gentler pace. New players are always welcome. For more information, contact Steve on 07495 453885.
