The Withernsea 10K and Fun Run has been hailed as its most successful yet after hundreds of runners and supporters packed the seafront for the annual event.
Organised by Withernsea Harriers, the races on Sunday, July 5, attracted competitors from across the region, with spectators lining the route to cheer them on in warm conditions.
Alex Lazenby, of City of Hull AC, was the first runner home in the main race, crossing the finish line in 33 minutes, 30 seconds. His clubmate Amy Barton won the women’s race, finishing in 40 minutes, 22 seconds.
Withernsea mayor Cllr Kristina Richardson started both the 2.2km fun run and the main 10K race before presenting the awards.
She said: “It was fantastic to see so many runners, both local and visiting, descend on Withernsea and line our promenade.
“Congratulations to everyone who took part and came to support. You all made it another memorable event here in Withernsea.
“It was another warm day and everyone rallied on, and we even saw a new course record.”
Just under 500 runners took part in the main race, while the fun run attracted more than 60 runners of all ages and abilities. Cllr Richardson also praised the work carried out by the organisers, marshals and volunteers before and during the event.
She said: “I would like to commend everyone involved in organising and marshalling, including all those behind the scenes both in the run-up and on the day itself.
“The event was exceptionally well organised and I know the amount of hard work that goes into events like these. Runners’ safety, wellbeing and enjoyment were visible throughout. Well done to everyone involved.
“A massive shout-out must also go to all the fantastic sponsors and supporters who continue to champion local events and help boost our local tourism and economy.”

The Harriers’ annual open race was first held in 2007 as a five-mile event and quickly became a popular fixture on the regional running calendar.
Following a two-year break because of the Covid-19 pandemic, entry numbers initially struggled to return to their previous levels.
The organising committee refreshed the event by increasing the main race distance to 10km and shortening the fun run, allowing it to take place away from the roads.
All 10K finishers received a commemorative technical T-shirt, while medals were presented to those completing the fun run.
A spokesman for Withernsea Harriers said: “The event was a huge success after all the months of planning and hard work put in by the organisers.
“The atmosphere was absolutely brilliant and seeing hundreds of happy runners cross the finish line proved what a fantastic, unifying event this was for our community.
“We’ve had lots of messages of support from local runners and those from further afield saying how much they enjoyed the morning and that they can’t wait for next year’s event.”
The club said it had been encouraging to see growing interest in running in the town, with a number of new members recently joining its training sessions.
The spokesman added: “Anyone who was inspired by the Withernsea 10K and has been thinking about giving running a go is welcome to get involved.
“Whether you are just starting out or looking to improve your running, we would love to welcome you.”
Premier Modular was the principal event sponsor, with further backing from the Gazette, George Lodge & Sons, Withernsea Town Council, Blip Active, Town SMART East Yorkshire, Fisk Printers and Castle Cafe.
