Tributes pour in for Hornsea Carnival stalwart

by Rebecca Hannant

Tributes have poured in for a volunteer who dedicated more than a decade to helping organise Hornsea Carnival events.

Dennis Mapplebeck, 76, of Hornsea, who died on October 21, was hailed by the Hornsea Carnival committee for “making a difference” after giving 11 years’ service and helping operations run smoothly.

In his role as a volunteer, Dennis covered health and safety and communications with relevant authorities, a role that carnival chairman Iain Poole said he was perfect for because of his experience in motorway maintenance.

Dennis was always on hand to ensure that all documentation for road closures was in place. When East Riding Council changed the road closure process, Dennis printed and hand-delivered letters to more than 400 properties, and was often seen putting up signs around the town and ensuring each event went ahead without incident.

Dennis also led the annual parade in his silver Chrysler and was always helping to fundraise for carnival events. Iain said: “Dennis chose to make a difference within the community and give the most amazing gift that anyone can give to others – their time.

“Dennis’s experience and support was unwavering. Even while he was ill these past few weeks, he still wanted to ensure the town had everything in place for the events he was so proud to have been part of.

“I know my transition to chairman would not have been as smooth without the support Dennis gave me. His understanding of council politics and policies was second to none.

“I was always in awe of Dennis, from his numerous achievements in his life, his amazing skill sets – being able to fly (which he achieved later in life), his musical skill, his ability to take any task in hand and complete it, and finally, his unwavering support for both carnival projects and my personal ones.

“Dennis was a true testament to the idea that age is just a number. I feel truly honoured to have known him, even if it was for just the briefest of times, and I feel a tremendous sadness at his passing.

“Even while writing these words, I feel the emotions washing over me. I can say wholeheartedly the world and town is all the poorer for his passing.”

In Dennis’s memory, the Hornsea Carnival will introduce the Mapplebeck Shield, which will be awarded for Best in Parade and continue as an annual tradition. His funeral will be held at noon on Friday, November 8, at Hornsea United Reformed Church.
