Seascape displays go up ahead of Open Gardens event

By John Prince

Displays featuring seascapes made out of wool and wood have been put up on Hornsea seafront.

They’re to support the upcoming Open Gardens event in the town to raise funds for the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI).

The displays at the NCI station show marine animals such as whales and fish, the odd seahorse, and the creature that has quickly becoming synonymous with Hornsea – the starfish. There is also a lighthouse and some colourful boats thrown in for good measure.

Andy Hill from NCI Hornsea said: “The displays were designed by Elaine Thompson. Making the displays took months.

“Elaine was helped by Hornsea Men in Sheds, who were commissioned to make the wooden sea creatures. The Hornsea Dolphins craft and cake group made some of the crocheted creatures.

“Elaine spent weeks crocheting flowers and then sewing them on to netting. Elaine, myself and Andy Oxlade have mounted all the displays on to the station walls and fireproofed them.

“The Open Gardens event is advertised on the national open gardens register, and there will be a variety of different offerings. Now all we need is some nice weather.”

Hornsea Open Gardens takes place on Sunday, June 14, when people will be able to walk around and see the gardens that are tended by local residents.

Maps are available for £5 from 9.30am at the bandstand in Memorial Gardens on the day. There will also be talks and refreshments.

The NCI station and the displays can be found at the north end of Marine Drive on the seafront.
