Remembrance project to create cascade of poppies

by Rebecca Hannant

A new project will see thousands of knitted poppies appear in Withernsea to mark the Remembrance period later this year.

The project is the work of Withernsea Royal British Legion president Darren England, who has decided to hang a cascade of poppies from a building in the town, the identity of which is being kept under wraps for now.

Darren said: “We have about 30 ladies from Withernsea and surrounding areas and as far afield as Malta who are knitting and crocheting poppies for a project I thought of last year.

“I wanted to have a cascade of poppies from a prominent building here in town for Remembrance 2023. Two weeks ago, I took the netting and with the help of the building committee placed it up and measured it. Even without the poppies it looked fantastic.

“Thank you to all the knitters, crocheters for all your help and the RAOB who donated funds for the wool.”

Anybody who would like to assist in knitting and crocheting poppies can join the Withernsea Poppies for Remembrance group on Facebook. Those who would like to produce poppies can drop them off at Withernsea Library.
