Pollution fears as car on cliff still not recovered a week on

by John Prince

A car that has gone over a cliff in Withernsea has still not been recovered more than a week on.

The blue Peugeot 107 Urban was first spotted upside down on the cliffs near Waxholme Road, north of the town, on Wednesday, April 8.

Since then, at the time of going to press, the vehicle had fallen further down the cliff, raising fresh concerns over safety and the risk of environmental damage. It is still unclear how the car ended up there or who owns it.

One passer-by, who did not want to be named, said there were concerns about possible pollution of the beach and sea, as the car was likely to still contain oil and fuel.

They said: “Someone needs to do something soon – what if it gets washed away by the tide?”

The Crown Estate has confirmed the vehicle is not on its land, meaning responsibility for the situation would appear to rest with East Riding Council and Humberside Police.

It has not been confirmed whether anyone was hurt and police have said an investigation has not yet been launched into how the car came to be on the cliff.

A spokesman for East Riding Council said: “We are in talks with the police about this issue.

“Once the car has been moved to a safe position at the top of the cliff, the council can get involved and arrange for the removal of the vehicle.”

People have been advised not to approach the car because it could still be unstable. The council has also urged anyone walking on the beach nearby to take care.
