People invited to try ceilidh dancing

By Michelle Horst

Residents are being encouraged to fend off the darker nights by taking part in Hornsea ceilidh dance classes.

This form of traditional Gaelic dance – often called barn dance – is growing ever more popular thanks to interest in sea shanties and folklore. Organisers are keen to highlight it as a way to stay active and make friends.

The popular Hornsea Ceilidh Band provides the tunes, with a range of English, Irish, Scottish, American and Scandinavian melodies.

“Music is good for helping improve mental health. Dancing helps improve coordination, balance and mobility. It’s fantastic for everyone. Ceilidh dancing ticks all those boxes,” said Alison Riley, the organiser.

The relaxed form of dancing is inexpensive and all-inclusive. No special clothing or shoes are required.

“I’m not a trained dancer. I’m so glad I don’t need to know the steps. It’s all about having fun,” said one participant.

“We laugh so much. It’s why I come,” said another regular. “It gets me out of the house. The exercise is just a bonus!”

Ceilidh classes are held monthly on Mondays, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Hornsea Methodist Church. The next session will be on Monday, September 23. Additional classes are on October 21, November 25, and December 16. Admission is £4.
