Patrington Primary School celebrates improved rating

Patrington Church of England Primary School has been awarded a Good Ofsted rating following its latest inspection.

Ofsted declared that the school is now Good in all areas after the school implemented a redesign of the curriculum. The rating overturns the previous the Requires Improvement rating.

The report said: “Pupils understand the school values of trust, friendship and perseverance and display positive behaviours.

“The school has high expectations for all pupils.

“Staff understand how to support all pupils with their learning, including those with special educational needs and/ or disabilities. Staff are happy and proud to work at the school.”

Inspectors noted that a new assessment system for core subjects was in place, which allows school leaders to more effectively track pupils’ progress and to identify any gaps in their knowledge.

They added: “Evidence from work in pupils’ books shows that this has had a positive impact on pupils’ progress across the school.

“Reading is a priority at the school. In Nursery, children take part in pre-phonics activities.

“From the first weeks of Reception, children begin to learn phonics. Staff regularly check pupils’ progress through the curriculum. The school identifies pupils who fall behind.

“These pupils receive support to catch up with their peers. Older pupils enjoy reading
– they use the playground ‘reading shed’ to read at playtimes and enjoy guided- reading sessions in class.

“The school’s provision to support pupils’ personal development is wide ranging. Pupils learn about relationships in an age-appropriate manner. They understand the protected characteristics and fundamental British values.

“Pupils take on different leadership roles across school. The Pupil Parliament has successfully campaigned to improve road safety outside the school gates.”

Gill Pepper, head teacher, said: “I am delighted that Patrington has a church school it can be proud of, at the heart of a friendly, supportive and welcoming community.

“Many within our parent, church and wider community have been on this long journey with us and we want to thank each one for their continued support.

“When I began my journey at this school in May 2022, I saw straightaway how amazing the Patrington children are and I wanted above all else for the children here to feel happy, supported and be challenged to be their best.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to give thanks to the diocese and to our amazing team of staff and governors – all have played their part in our joint success.”

Josie Speck, chairman of governors, said: “The local governing body has worked closely with the school and with Ebor and we recognise the hard work and commitment that has resulted in this pleasing judgement and report.”

Gail Brown, chief executive of Ebor Academy Trust, which operates 25 primary schools across the East Riding, Hull, Selby, York and on the Yorkshire coast, said: “I am thrilled that the hard work and dedication of Gill Pepper and her team at the school, plus additional support and expertise from the trust, has resulted in a Good rating for Patrington. It is extremely well-deserved.

“We are particularly pleased for the community and is a fitting end to a busy and ultimately highly successful school year.”
