New side Hornsea Knights look forward to league challenge

Hornsea Knights is a brand-new independent football club, playing in the East Riding FA’s Hull and District Youth Football League under-10s seven-a-side league this 2024-25 season.

The inspiration for the club’s name and badge comes from Hornsea’s own town crest, with the aim of connecting the kids and parents to the pride of representing the town.

The club has been set up with the backing of a small but committed group of parents and is proud to have the Board Inn Pub and Restaurant in Skipsea as the primary shirt sponsor.

Having invested in first-class equipment and a superb new home strip by Italian kit manufacturer Errea, the talented squad are keen and ready for the challenge of the new season.

After winning their final pre-season friendly against Tickton Vipers, the campaign kicked off on September 15 with a hard-fought win over an excellent Barham AFC side, coming back from 5-1 down to win 6-5!

Starting up an independent football club is not easy, and the club has devised a unique and exciting fundraising challenge for the team to engage with to both raise funds and connect the team with the town.

The Hornsea’s 7 Wonders in 7 Miles challenge, taking place on Saturday, October 5, will see the team walk seven miles around Hornsea, on a route that takes in seven “wonders” of the town. At each stop, one of the team will have to complete seven keepy-uppies in order for them to continue on their way.

The walk kicks off at Hornsea School and Language College and then takes in the beach, the old railway station, the site of the old potteries, the Mere – where the team will kindly be treated to an ice cream on the house at the Mere Café – Bettison’s Folly, Memorial Gardens and Hall Garth Park.

Matt Carter, fundraising organiser, team manager and coach, says there were plenty of wonders to choose from: “This is a special, unique place with a rich history and lots to appreciate.

“Making that come to life for the team will hopefully bring with it a sense of pride and determination to represent it competitively, being the best that they can be, and connect them to their town.”

The club is still looking for additional players from the area to further improve the current squad.

Training takes place on Monday evenings from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, at Hornsea School and Language College’s 3G pitch, and matches take place on Sundays.

To be eligible, this is for boys or girls in school years four or five.
