New mayor for town

Ian Blackburn has taken office as Withernsea’s new mayor.

Taking the chains at the annual town meeting, Cllr Blackburn paid tribute to his predecessor, Cllr Lyn Healing, saying she had balanced the role with that of South West Holderness ward councillor “extremely well”.

He added: “I am very proud to become the mayor of such a vibrant town as Withernsea and an active town council.”

Cllr Blackburn’s deputy for the year is Cllr Alex Camplin, and his mayoress is Cllr Jacqui Blackburn, herself a former mayor of Withernsea.

At the town meeting, Cllr Healing presented to the Armed Forces and Veterans’ Breakfast Club the money raised at her recent civic event.

Earlier in the week, Cllr Blackburn made a presentation to Captain Williams, the winner of the town council’s annual pub toilet awards.

Speaking at the event, Cllr Blackburn said: “Although it is seen as a bit of fun, it is also important that a pub not only has good drinks, good food and friendly staff, but the facilities do not let the experience of visiting that pub down.

“Captain Williams certainly deserved the award.”

On Wednesday, May 22, the annual parish meeting will be held at the Meridian Centre, incorporating the presentation of the 2024 Town Award.

Those who would like to speak at the meeting must contact the town council office by 3pm on Friday, May 17. Call 01964 614984 or email [email protected].
