New club aims to combat social isolation

by Rebecca Hannant

A new club to combat social stimulation and boost mental health has been launched in Withernsea.

On Thursday, August 31, the Shores Centre held the launch of the 1pm Club, an initiative that aims to combat social isolation and help people gain new skills.

During the launch, Withernsea’s mayor, Cllr Lyn Healing, attended to chat to staff and the attendees.

The club has benefited from the East Yorkshire Do It for East Yorkshire grant, which has helped towards the purchase of games and items for the weekly workshops.

Each week the group will have something different to offer from wreath and flower bouquet making, knitting lessons, cooking lessons and scrapbook-making.

Chloe Hart, deputy manager of Shores Homecare, said: “The sessions take place every Thursday at the Shores Centre at 1pm. It is open to everyone over the age of 18.

“It grows people’s social stimulation, and their mental and physical wellbeing. It helps them get out and about to meet new friends, and gets them a lunch.”

The event is free to attend, but people are asked to call the centre beforehand on 01964 611602 so they can get an idea of numbers.
