Members of Withernsea Churches Together and local performers from across South Holderness took part in moving acts of witness on Good Friday, both in Withernsea and in Hull.
In Hull city centre, a dramatic retelling of the Passion of Christ took place in and around Hull Minster, forming part of the church’s 600th anniversary celebrations.
The outdoor production was adapted and extended by a priest from Keyingham, who had previously staged a similar version in Withernsea. The cast included actors from Withernsea and surrounding villages, many of whom had spent weeks rehearsing for the two-hour spectacle.
Rev Philip West played a central role in both the organisation and performance, having memorised the script and helped coordinate the event. The dry weather held throughout the morning as the re-enactment moved through Queen Victoria Square and along Whitefriargate, culminating in a powerful crucifixion scene in Trinity Square.
The Bishop of Hull, the Rt Rev Eleanor Sanderson, closed the event with a prayer and blessing at 1pm.
Meanwhile in Withernsea, members of Churches Together gathered at Pier Towers for a walk of witness through the town. Carrying a cross, they made their way to the United Reformed Church, where a Good Friday service was held reflecting on the meaning of the day.
