Two members of Hornsea Inshore Rescue’s crew have gained their RYA Advanced Power Boat certificates after weeks of training and study.
Coxswain James Kennedy and trainee coxswain Jake Blackburn-Roberts earned their RYA last weekend following two days of examinations in both theory and practice.
The practical exam involved taking a powerboat out of Hull Marina and onto the River Humber, one of the world’s most challenging rivers to navigate. There, they successfully performed a series of exercises in both daylight and nighttime conditions. The pair now join other members of the highly trained Hornsea Inshore Rescue crew who already hold the qualification.
Sue Hickson-Marsay MBE, CEO and station manager, said: “All our volunteer crew follow a progressive path of training to gain RYA qualifications. It is so satisfying to see so many of our crew so highly qualified and capable of dealing with any of the many different and dangerous situations they can be faced with.”
Hornsea Inshore Rescue is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is an independent local rescue organisation, not part of the RNLI, and supported solely by donations and grants.
It also raises funds by running courses on water safety, RYA certifications for offshore powerboating, jet ski handling, VHF radio certification, and first aid. They also offer corporate days and school visits.
