Last Sunday saw Easington United AFC and Patrington CC come together for the first of what it is hoped will become an annual Pride of Holderness event, held on a fine sunny day in the shadows of the Queen of Holderness herself.
Featuring members of both clubs in games of football and cricket, it drew a decent crowd to Patrington playing fields in the morning and even more were present across the road to Southside Cricket Ground for the afternoon events.
By late afternoon it was the cricketers who lifted the inaugural Pride of Holderness trophy (kindly sponsored by Curtis McElwee) after triumphing at both sports.
The morning saw goals from Ben Butler and Bob Eldon-Smith prove decisive for the Pat lads (whose team unsurprisingly included a number of their football clubmates). John Pontone’s strike gave the Eastenders late hope but the game finished 2-1.
In the afternoon, any hopes of chasing down Patrington’s 136-6 to win the T20 cricket disappeared in a flurry of early wickets, although some form of “resistance” down the order – in which Cal Burden hit 14 – did at least achieve a modicum of respectability in the Eastenders’ forlorn chase.
At the end of proceedings, Patrington CC chairman Jason McKinley presented his team’s skipper James McGinty with the trophy.
Elsewhere, there was a win for Dec Precious in the “last man standing” penalty competition, earning himself a case of beer. Meanwhile, youngster Harry Fawcett picked up some Hull City tickets for going furthest among the eight to 15-year-olds.
In the afternoon, another youngster, Alfie Foster, was named man of the match in the cricket.
Events were brought to a close by local singer Connor Penson who performed in front of an appreciative crowd, many of whom will be keen to now see the event repeated on an annual basis.
At time of going to print it is anticipated that more than £900 has been raised towards the coffers of both clubs. As you can imagine, there are dozens of people to thank for ensuring the day proved such a success. These are as follows:
