Hornsea man jailed for savage knife attack

A Hornsea man who turned up at another man’s house armed with a kitchen knife – stabbing him multiple times and causing injuries so severe that the victim was placed into a coma – has been jailed for 17-and-a-half years.

Ian Pemberton, 62, of Cliff Road, was charged with attempted murder and pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier hearing at Hull Crown Court in February. He was sentenced at the same court today, Wednesday, April 23.

In August last year, Humberside Police received a call from paramedics just before 1am reporting that a man had been stabbed inside a property in Hornsea.

On entering the property, police discovered a 43-year-old man who was being transported to hospital by paramedics for treatment to life-threatening stab wounds to his chest and neck.

Members of the public at the scene told officers that the knife used in the attack had been discarded into the kitchen and was covered in the victim’s blood, and that the attacker was Pemberton – who had fled the scene in an attempt to evade arrest, not knowing the extent of the injuries he had inflicted on a man he knew.

Armed officers were deployed to Pemberton’s home address where he was swiftly located covered in the victim’s blood and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder – just 45 minutes after the initial call came in.

Leading the investigation was PC Tanya Binnington, who said: “This was a frightful, unprovoked attack where Pemberton stormed round to the house of someone he knew armed with a kitchen knife looking for someone else, but instead stabbed the first defenceless person who came to the door in a fit of uncontrollable rage.

“The victim sustained a severe stab wound to his chest causing a bleed in his lung, and another that narrowly avoided the artery in his neck. Medical professionals had to place him in an induced coma where he remained for three days. He is lucky to be alive.

“The mental scars of the horrific ordeal he endured will undoubtedly stay with him for the rest of his life, and I’d like to thank him for his patience throughout the entire process.

“I’d also like to commend the members of the public who assisted the victim at the scene and came forward with crucial information that assisted officers in getting justice for the victim and, ultimately, taking Pemberton off our streets.

“Knife crime can impact people from any walk of life, that is why we continue to do everything we can to take weapons off our streets.

“It is really important to educate our communities that by possessing some types of knives, even just at home, they could be committing an offence.

“Whether you find yourself in a confrontational situation at home, or are thinking about carrying a knife for your protection, ask yourself, what is the point? One knife impacts more than one life.”
