Hornsea cadets get their Wings during thrilling flying day

July has been busy for the Hornsea and District RAF Air Cadets Squadron.

Being part of such a prestigious national youth organisation, there are many opportunities to participate in training at other venues throughout the UK.

Three cadets – Corporal Ayrton, Cadet Milner and Cadet Close – attended weapons training at 739 Scarborough Squadron, where they were taught weapons handling and safety drills, then coached through some target practice. They also had the chance to meet cadets and staff from other areas.

Flight Sergeant Seal, Cadet Milner and Cadet Whitehead enjoyed a flying day at RAF Leeming on July 7. Following a briefing, they were each taken on a flight in a Grob Tutor two-seater training aircraft where they were lucky enough to take the controls and have a go at flying. At the end of the flight, they enjoyed some aerobatics including nose dives and barrel rolls. At the end of the day the cadets achieved their Wings badges and were presented with certificates.

Air Cadets is open for young people aged between 12 and 19 years and the Hornsea Squadron meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7.30- 9.30pm.

They are also very keen to recruit more adult volunteers, either as uniformed or civilian staff, to support the running of the squadron and oversee the activities undertaken.
