First soapbox rally to raise carnival funds

by Rebecca Hannant

Organisers of Hornsea Carnival have announced plans to bring a soapbox rally to the town.

The event will be the first of its kind and will help secure more funding for the carnival, which takes place every July. The rally also promises to follow in the carnival tradition and be fun for the whole family and free to enter and attend.

Although plans have yet to be fully confirmed by the Hornsea Carnival committee, including the date and location, the event is now open for entries. They are looking for teams to come up with creative and comedic carts.

To enter, your soapbox must have four wheels, and be home-made, push-powered, and must turn at least two wheels to steer. Age restrictions may also apply.

Points will be scored out of 100 among the following categories: Style/Creativity, which will be awarded out of 25 points. Pre- Start Performance will also be awarded on points out of 25. Distance covered will be out of 20 points, alongside the time of the run. Comedy value will also be scored out of 10 points.

The event will be supported by East Riding Council, Bridlington Bay Lobster, Hornsea Town Council, Yorkshire Coast BID, Backfire Promotions and Seaside FM.

Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up, email [email protected]. Include a team name and a list of members. Organisers also need a firm commitment from teams to enter the race.
