Large crowds packed Hornsea Inshore Rescue’s boathouse compound last Sunday to enjoy the charity’s 30th anniversary celebrations and blessing of the new lifeboat.
Entertainment was provided by the Shanty Lassies, the Humberside Police Brass Band, the Hornsea Choir, a dog show, Hornsea Mermaids’ white elephant stall, face painting, a raffle for a free ride in the lifeboat, and displays by the Coastguard, police rural crime prevention unit and Humberside Fire and Rescue, among many other attractions.
The blessing of the boat ceremony was carried out by Rev Tina Stevens, who passed a tree branch to the crew on the boat to symbolise safe return to land. Champagne was sprayed over the boat’s bows – as well as some of the crew – by leading coxswain Karl Shannon.
Rev Stevens later commented on the remarkable turnout of people to support and raise funds for the new boat, saying: “It shows how much we value the work of Hornsea Inshore Rescue, and it has been a privilege to come and bless the boat.”
Sam Kell of the Hornsea Choir said it was great to be part of the celebrations, which started with the Manchester Camerata earlier in the year when a specially composed song, Spirit of Hornsea, was performed for the first time.
The song was again sung by all present during the blessing, along with the hymn usually referred to as For Those in Peril on the Sea.
The brass band performed three sessions, featuring their own versions of many popular songs. A Hornsea Inshore Rescue spokesman said: “A special mention must be made of Janet Fulton who stood in for their usual drummer and put in a wonderful performance, working solely from sheet music. Janet also played keyboard for the Hornsea Choir.”
The fun dog show was judged by Jane Willingham, of Withernsea’s Belshedo Pet and Animal Supplies. Jane is a fully qualified Crufts judge – however, on this occasion, she said she wished she had a rosette for every entrant.
Sue Hickson-Marsay MBE, Hornsea Inshore Rescue CEO and station manager, said, “It has been a most wonderful day and has raised lots of funds enabling us to continue and further develop our life-saving capabilities both along the coast and inland. Our thanks go out to everyone who has contributed to make all this such a super success.”
