Community input sought for celebratory artwork

by Tim Nuttall

Withernsea residents are being asked to contribute ideas for a new art installation near the town’s seafront, which its originators hope will celebrate “the spirit of the town”.

Thanks to funding secured through East Riding Council’s Do it for East Yorkshire community grant scheme, two panels of bespoke artwork will be installed at the Shores Centre in a bid to enhance the surrounding area and celebrate the town and its community.

Shores CEO Jayne Nendick said: “Ahead of the centre’s 20th anniversary next year, and thanks to the support of East Riding Council, we are looking forward to working with the community on creating artwork which not only celebrates the spirit of Withernsea, but also reflects the talent, creativity and fun that exists within the town.”

Anyone wishing to contribute ideas to the project can do so by contacting Shores on 01964 615190, emailing [email protected], or by visiting in person at 29-31 Seaside Road.

Helping to bring the project to life will be Leeds-based Ark Display Graphics, whose experience with installations in a variety of contexts, from cultural to commercial, will ensure maximum impact and longevity.

Jayne added: “We are looking at two mural installations, one facing Seaside Road and the other facing the promenade. These will be printed on weather-resistant polycarbonate panels to ensure they are protected from the elements.

“In addition to the funding secured through the Do it for East Yorkshire community grant, which will cover the bulk of the design and installation work, the Shores Centre will also be contributing funds for the installation of spot lighting to help the artwork remain visible for residents and visitors both day and night. We really want this project to be a collaborative celebration of the town and we are looking forward to seeing people’s ideas.”

The Do it for East Yorkshire community grant is available to voluntary and community groups, as well as town and parish councils, in the East Riding.

Awards can be between £1,500 and £5,000 per group, with applications also accepted for up to £10,000 for projects that have capital costs only.

Between June 2021 and the end of March 2024, more than £800,000 was awarded to 263 projects across the East Riding, benefiting an estimated 90,000 residents.
