Church hosts historical talk and tour

On Saturday, March 23, St Nicholas Church in Withernsea held its first event of 2024 by hosting a talk from Withernsea poet and writer Godfrey Holmes, followed by a Commonwealth War Graves tour by Darren England.

Godfrey presented a talk on the Slapton Sands Disaster which was followed by Darren’s tour of the fallen in St Nicholas churchyard. Despite the weather being blustery, the day was relaxed, informative and successful.

After the event the Friends of St Nicholas Church team served tea, coffee and homemade scones for a donation.

Funds raised on the day totalled £126 which will be contributed towards the Churches Conservation Trust, Friends of St Nicholas, and the War Memorial Clock.

The CWGC tours will return on Friday, May 17, and Sunday, May 19.

Attendee Wendy Graves said: “It was a very interesting talk. The war graves tour was also interesting – I don’t know how Darren hung on to those papers in that wind. Well done to you both.”
