Choir to return to its roots for 20th birthday gig

by Rebecca Hannant

A leading choir that was formed in Hornsea is preparing to return to its roots for a 20th anniversary concert this summer.

Hull-based Hot Gospel Choir was formed in Hornsea as G-Choir in 2004, and regularly performed at the United Reformed Church.

Since its early days, the choir has moved on to new ventures and now has members across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

In recent years the group has achieved new heights, twice being named runner-up in the Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year competition – in 2019 and again in 2022.

As part of the forthcoming 20th anniversary celebrations, choir co-ordinator Helen Garnett said that the group would be performing at the United Reformed Church in Hornsea on June 8.

During the show the choir will perform two 45-minute sets of their favourite gospel songs and most inspirational tunes.

Helen said: “It feels nice to be able to come back to Hornsea and mark the occasion. I’ve lived in Hornsea most of my life, so it’s lovely to be able to go back. My mum’s in Hornsea and I’ve got family and friends there.

“We’re just really pleased to be performing at the United Reformed Church again because they were incredibly supportive when we started.

“It’s going to be quite an accolade. We’re hoping it might encourage people to come and see us more.”

Money raised at the event will be put towards a charity named Sing for Joy which was set up by Helen. The charity aims to get children aged five to 12 engaging with gospel singing. Helen is striving towards raising £25,000 which will contribute towards an event at the Connexin Live arena in Hull on June 13, 2025.

Helen added: “This is aimed at the kind of people that might not necessarily have musical experience.

“We have spaces for 1,500 children across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

“The children will be able to perform in front of loved ones. They will also be able to perform with a live professional band. Our keyboard player has worked with the likes of Westlife and the Jacksons.”
