by Ray Duffill

Preston Womens Institute’s retiring president, Margaret Hunn, has presented a £336 cheque to Jayne Beck, charity manager for Hull and East Riding Breast Friends, at the group’s last meeting.

This sum was raised at a dedicated fundraising afternoon in Preston Community Hall on Saturday, March 18.

Jayne expressed her appreciation, thanking all of the Preston WI members for their tireless efforts. She explained, that as a small local grassroots charity, donations help to continue supporting not only those affected by breast cancer but others with illnesses and hair loss. HER Breast Friends offers many positive benefits and services, including support and friendship.

With Margaret’s retirement as Preston WI president, and of Jenny Davis as secretary, thanks and gifts of appreciation were presented to both ladies for their valued service. Both will continue as committee members.

Two new officers have been appointed to these leading roles: Linda McGowan was congratulated on her appointment as Preston Wl’s new president, with Mary Wood as secretary and Liz Garvey continuing as treasurer.

Mrs Wood said: “Preston WI has an active and hard-working committee who have a busy and exciting year planned with interesting and entertaining speakers.

“The group has a packed and varied programme of events and activities planned, such as theatre/cinema visits, coach trips, garden visits, arts, and crafts events, and much more.

“With thriving monthly activities: book, dining, walking groups, and weekly craft club and coffee mornings, there are lots to get involved in. Local events are also supported including Preston Village Show, craft fairs, and charities such as food banks, homeless, children’s and medical, etc.

“A regally themed garden party for members is planned to celebrate the King’s Coronation, also a number of ladies are set to compete in the Holderness group of WIs at the Annual Rally with competitions and evening entertainment, this year hosted by Burstwick WI on Wednesday, May 16. Additionally, the East Riding Federation of WIs have exciting plans for a spectacular programme in their 40th anniversary year – there is a lot to look forward to.”
