Charitable club in plea for new members

by Rebecca Hannant

Hornsea Rotary Club has issued an appeal for new members to ensure they can continue supporting good causes in the community.

New president Ray Thompson, who took over from Sidney Fox this summer, said there was a shortfall in members and the club needed to “get the word out” so they could raise as much money as possible for local causes.

Ray, who has been a member of the Rotary Club for more than a decade, said it contained some of the friendliest people that he had ever met, and encouraged more people to join.

The organisation specialises in supporting local causes and charities and hosts regular fundraising events.

He said: “If we can try to raise membership, then the more members we have, the more money we can raise, the more events we can attend, and so on and so forth.

“We’re trying to get the word out about the Rotary to try to get people more interested because people may not have heard of it.”

Anyone wishing to join can get in touch with the Hornsea Rotary Club via hornsearotary.org. uk. The request will then go to the members who will decide if someone can join.

Meanwhile, they will be hosting a meal featuring an informative talk about drink- spiking on Monday, September 9, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Hornsea Golf Club.

Ray added: “People think those who get spiked are 21-year-olds going to the nightclub. My wife got spiked and she was in her 50s at the time.

“It’s not just about date-raping – people can be spiked for all sorts of reasons.

“It happened when we were on holiday. People often don’t talk about it, or they believe they’ve had too much to drink.

“We believe if we talk about it then more people will go to the police and report it rather than be embarrassed about it.

“Afterwards a magistrate will do a talk about what to do about getting spiked, and the sort of support that is available.”

It is a club meeting and guest evening, so anyone can go, but booking is required.
