Cars to be banned from School Streets Zones

A scheme is being launched to restrict access to traffic outside some primary schools at opening and closing times.

The aim of the move by East Riding Council, in partnership with Humberside Police, is to help reduce congestion and improve the local environment.

During school start and finish times, only pedestrians and cyclists will be able use the surrounding roads.

A School Streets Zone has been created around Bilton Community Primary School, with access to Highfield Crescent, including Ward Avenue and Abbey Road, being restricted between 8.15am and 9.15am, and 2.45pm and 3.45pm.

Parents and children are encouraged to walk, scoot or cycle to school. Those who do need to drive must park well away from the School Streets Zone with consideration to local residents’ access needs and without obstructing the carriageway or footpath.

A spokesman said: “With School Streets we aim to create a more pleasant environment for everyone, while making sure residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists can still use the road.”
