Book shines a light on long-gone shops

by Terry Bearpark

THE CO-OP in Withernsea, Robinson’s Emporium in Patrington, Skeltons in Hedon and Hinch’s in Roos – long gone but remembered by many.

These are just a few of the many shops and traders that have been recalled and documented in a new book produced by a local historical and community group to preserve the rich history of the area.

A Guide to Holderness: Memories of Shopping is the second book published by Hidden Holderness, formed in 2000 to research and promote the unique heritage of South East Holderness.

Using old photographs and memories of residents, the book recalls the many fascinating shops and trading establishments in all the towns and villages in Holderness and demonstrates the large number of shops that abounded in the area but which are long gone.

Edited and designed by Hidden Holderness member Graham Houston, with a large contribution from Kath Speck of Hollym and “Yorkshire Lass” Dot Perkins of Withernsea, Memories of Shopping explores the businesses and characters that were essential to everyday life in days gone by when local shops were the backbone of the community, transport was limited, personal cars were few and far between, and Amazon was a river in South America.

The book was launched at the Winter Crank Up meeting of the Holderness Vintage Machinery Club at Ottringham Village Hall on Saturday by chairman Eileen Clarkson.

It is available from many businesses in the area by contacting Rachel via email at [email protected] or by calling 07703 322003. The price is £5 per book (plus £2.50 P&P if required).

New members of Hidden Holderness are always welcome – contact Rachel for details or follow it on Facebook.
