Disability riding charity marks 50 years

by Terry Bearpark

A local charity that provides riding facilities for disabled people is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its formation.

The Hull and Holderness Riding for the Disabled Association was formed in 1976 and is part of a national group consisting of more than 400 local branches offering therapeutic riding, which helps improve coordination, confidence, and physical health as well as giving opportunities for achievement, such as taking part in competitions.

It welcomes people with physical or learning disabilities and autism and there are no age restrictions for those using its facilities.

The Hull and Holderness branch is based in Paull and meets on Monday evenings and Thursday afternoons. A dedicated group of volunteers provide riding for about 12 riders of all ages and abilities at each session.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, a coffee afternoon was held at the Memorial Hall in Burton Pidsea on Saturday afternoon where members and supporters packed the hall to enjoy refreshments and home-made baking. Special anniversary cupcakes were also available.

With a raffle, the afternoon raised £841, which will be used to help run the centre.

Volunteers are always welcome to any of the sessions – for more details call 01964 626257 or email [email protected].
