20mph speed limits ‘will make our streets safer’

by Rebecca Hannant

A 20mph speed limit is to be trialled in parts of Hedon, East Riding Council has confirmed.

The scheme, which is being introduced in March in a bid to create more pedestrian-friendly environments in the town, has been met with mixed opinions among local politicians and residents.

East Riding Council says the move follows an increasing number of requests for 20mph speed limits in residential areas, and the decision was based on the outcome of a survey of Hedon residents and people who make regular visits to the town.

The scheme has been backed by South West Holderness councillor Steve Gallant, who said the town council had consistently and unanimously voted to extend the 20mph in a bid to make streets safer.

Cllr Gallant said: “The town council backed calls for extending the 20mph zones in the town unanimously about three years ago. As ward councillor for South West Holderness I secured funding for this and several other villages from Cllr Anne Handley, the council leader, in this year’s budget.

“Where 20mph zones have been introduced there has been a reduction in speeds, most importantly reducing the number of collisions and fewer injuries.

“The main objective is to make Hedon’s residential streets safer, particularly for pedestrians, cyclists and those on mobility scooters as well as drivers.”

However, some residents have argued that the scheme could cause more pollution and congestion.

The trial will begin in March and last six months. Data will be collected on vehicle speeds, traffic volumes and accident rates. Meanwhile, residents will be encouraged to share their feedback and observations.

A spokesman for East Riding Council said: “Hedon has been selected for a 20mph speed limit zone trial following an increasing number of requests for 20mph speed limits in residential areas.

“This initiative reduces the current speed limit from 30mph to 20mph and is part of a broader effort to create safer, more pedestrian-friendly environments.

“By reducing speeds, we can make our streets safer and more pleasant for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike.

“The decision to introduce the 20mph trial in Hedon was made following a survey of Hedon residents and people who visit Hedon.

“Input from communities has been invaluable in identifying areas where lower speeds will make the most positive impact.

“The trial will begin in March in several residential areas in Hedon and run for six months.

“Residents are encouraged to share their feedback and observations throughout this trial period.

“We will also be collecting data on vehicle speeds, traffic volumes and accident rates.

“The feedback and evidence will help determine the effectiveness of the 20mph limit and guide future decisions on road safety measures.

“There will be clear and prominent signs, along with road markings to remind drivers of the reduced speed limit and encourage compliance. Our goal is for 20mph speed limits to be self-enforcing.”
