Two Withernsea RNLI volunteers have qualified as launch authorities, with one already putting his training into practice during a search for a missing person.
Darren England and John Hickey, a former member of HM Coastguard, passed their assessments “with flying colours” on Wednesday, October 28, demonstrating the knowledge and decision-making skills needed for the role.
Launch authorities are responsible for authorising lifeboat launches, taking into account factors such as weather conditions, crew availability and operational safety.
The assessments marked the culmination of both volunteers’ hard work and commitment throughout their training.
Darren oversaw his first lifeboat launch in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, when Withernsea RNLI was tasked to assist in a search for a missing person along the Holderness coastline in challenging foggy conditions.
Withernsea RNLI training coordinator Sean Bell said: “We are absolutely delighted to see Darren and John successfully complete their assessments. Both have shown tremendous dedication and enthusiasm throughout their training, and their success is thoroughly deserved.
“Having two more qualified Launch Authorities is fantastic news for our station. They play such an important role in ensuring our lifeboat crews can launch safely and effectively when called upon.
“We’re incredibly fortunate to have volunteers like Darren and John, who willingly give up their time to support the station and our lifesaving work. We’re all incredibly proud of them and look forward to seeing them develop further in their new roles.”
The station also thanked RNLI assessors Sam and Anna for their time, support and expertise throughout the assessment process.
