Withernsea’s mayor has urged drivers to plan ahead and use town centre car parks as the Tour of Britain prepares to pass through the town tomorrow.
Stage three of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men will start in Hull on Friday, September 4, before heading through Holderness, including Hedon, Preston, Thorngumbald, Keyingham, Ottringham, Patrington, Withernsea and Hornsea, on its way to Beverley.
Temporary traffic and parking restrictions will be in place along parts of the route, with residents, businesses and visitors being advised to check official guidance, allow extra time and follow signs and instructions on the day.
Withernsea Town Mayor Cllr Kristina Richardson said the town was looking forward to giving the riders, teams, visitors and spectators a warm “Withernsea welcome”, but urged people to make practical arrangements in advance.
She said: “It is fantastic to see an event of this scale visiting our part of the East Riding, and I’m sure residents and local businesses will join us in creating a great atmosphere and showing everyone watching what Withernsea has to offer.
“Ahead of the event, we would encourage residents and visitors to take note of the official event guidance and the parking and traffic restrictions being put in place by East Riding Council.”
The race is expected to arrive in Withernsea just after 11am.
Cllr Richardson said people travelling into the town, or those living along the route needing alternative parking, could use free car parks at Station Road, near the Hut, as well as Lee Avenue, Hull Road and Withernsea Library.
Chargeable parking is also available at Memorial Car Park.
She added: “Please plan your journey in advance, allow extra time and follow any temporary signage and instructions in place on the day.
“Withernsea Town Council is not the organiser of the Tour of Britain event or the associated traffic and parking arrangements. We are sharing this local information to help residents, businesses and visitors plan for the day and to support what we hope will be a fantastic occasion for the town.
“Most importantly, when the riders arrive, let’s line the route, make some noise and give them a Withernsea Welcome to remember.”
The race is expected to bring large numbers of spectators to the route, with communities across Holderness decorating streets with bunting, flags, bikes and balloons ahead of the riders’ arrival.
Motorists are being reminded that delays are expected, and anyone travelling through the area should check the latest route and road information before setting off.
